The Long Road Ahead

So scotland has finally banned physical child abuse bringing Scotland into line with United Nations recommendations. it has created some tension in northern ireland as a spokesperson for NSPCC Northern Ireland has now set a focus on passing legislation in Northern Ireland.

To which i have seen and heard peoples opinions on this subject and the fact that there is still contested views on this is shocking!

It should go without saying but in this day and age but you shouldn’t hit your child or anyone else’s for that matter but one of the things I hear people say “oh I was hit and I turned out okay” I don’t like this, to me it’s an excuse to condone these acts of violence.

This is not to say that can’t be forceful just that you can be forceful in a way that doesn’t involve pain or fear of being psyically abused, after all, a child is a lot smaller than you and a lot less resilient.

I have been trying to wrap my head around why they think they can justify this and I can’t find a reason just think about it you are hitting someone who is a lot smaller & weaker than you and who is dependant on you to look after them this sort of abuse is not warranted we don’t hit grown adults for things we do as children so then why do people think its okay?

is it because people were brought in a different time? do they think because their parents did that to them that they have the right to do the same? or another reason that I think is that they are frustrated and take their anger out on the child because it gives them a feeling of power in their powerless life.

people didn’t think about the psychological effects that they cause when they hit their child, thankfully we have made such strides in understanding physical & mental health, if you or anyone you know have done this to a child then in my book you’re not fit to have or bring up a child in this lifetime,

Think about we have access to information that our parents and grandparents didn’t have, we are supposed to be better than them not repeat their mistakes because they didn’t know better.

it’s time to change it! we should all want to be better than those who came before us and to leave the world in a better way than when we came into it.
